Sylvester Herring, a native of Coffeyville, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, July 8, 2010 in Houston, Texas.
Sylvester was born March 20, 1933 to Henry and Louise Herring. He attended Roosevelt Jr. High and Field Kindley Memorial High School. He married Lillian (Wilson) Herring and from this union seven children were born: son Sylvester “Tony” (Carolyn Herring) of Chicago, IL; daughter Skye (Lonnie McGowen) of Humble, TX; twin sons Christopher Herring of Pasadena, TX and Craig Herring of Coffeyville, KS; daughter Twana (Michael Horner) of Humble, TX; daughter Glenda Simmons of Beaumont, TX; daughter Tina (Donis Evans) of Beaumont, TX. After the death of Lillian, he later moved to California where he met and married Peggy Herring of Vallejo, CA.
He is survived by two sisters: Helen Herring Burrell of Washington St.; Mary Alice Herring (Terry Fullard) of Coffeyville, KS. Preceding him in death were three brothers: Clifford Herring, Henry Herring, Willie Joe Herring and sister Elizabeth Herring Scott.
Others left to cherish his memories: brother-in-laws Marcus Wilson (Carolyn) of Irving, TX, James Davison (Evelyn) of Coffeyville, KS, Percy Lyle of California; sister-in-laws Barbara Taylor of Independence, MO, Donna Scott (Louis) of Bartlesville, OK; and Mary Wilson of Coffeyville, KS. His beloved grandchildren: Anthony, ShaTonya; Lonnie Jr. (Tiffany), Stephen; Crystal, Shaletha, Chris Jr.; DeMarrio, Charleka, Duke; Quintin, Quince III; Jovannah, Jacqueline, Ernest Jr.; Donis Jr., Darius, Donisha and a host of great grandchildren, relatives and friends.
Sylvester served in the U.S. Army; worked for the U.S. Postal Service and Halliburton; pursued a career as an “amateur” boxer; was instrumental in the “start-up” Boxing League for the Boys Club of Coffeyville; member of the Ritz Club and was involved with numerous community events and functions.
Dad/Papa lived a “lively” life amongst his children and friends. He loved to discuss and debate politics, watch and attend sport functions and was always ready to give his opinion on life affairs whether you agreed with him or not. We always marveled at his intelligence as he could provide some insight on almost any subject; and in his presence, we were able to both laugh and cry.
We loved him dearly and feel our loss.
